Lotus (Padma) aquatic nymphaceous plant, Nelumbo nucifera,
having shield-like leaves and solitary flowers usually projecting above
the water; leaves are similar to water lilies but somewhat cupped and
some of the leaves stand above the surface of water. Flowers are about
8-15 cm across, rose pink to white and fragrant. Local Hindu communities
extensively use this flower during their durga
puja festival. Flowers are also used in indigenous system
of medicine. The ripe seeds are edible.
