Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) Bangladesh is both a riverine and a maritine country. In view of the importance of inland water and overseas communication, the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation was established in February 1972. Its headquarters is in Chittagong. But it also has offices in Khulna and Dhaka. All its offices deal in marketing and chartering ships. The marketing department looks after maintaining the corporation's ships and the chartering department deals in chartering ships, maintaining public relations and appointing officers and staff. It has offices in Singapore and London. The minister for shipping is the ex-officio chairman of the corporation. He is supported by the managing director, directors, a secretary, a general manager, an assistant general manager and office staff. At the beginning, the corporation had no ship of its own and started working merely as agents for others.
The corporation acquired its first ship Banglar Doot
in 1974. By 2001, it had 13 ships, including 2 oil tankers. It charters
out its container ships and tankers and also charters in ships from other
companies. The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation has been playing an important
role in exporting and importing oil products, readymade garments and machinery.
According to its 2001 report, the corporation's biggest ship Banglar Doot
has the carrying capacity of 16,771 metric ton and Banglar Kakali
can carry 16,764 metric ton. The corporation has dockyards at Khulna and
