Mir Bahr was the head of the navy during the Sultanate and Mughal periods. Sometimes it was called nawwara. The head of the nawwara was called Mir Bahr or Admiral.
In Bengal iwaz
khalji (1212-1227 AD) first organised the navy. Since Bengal
is a riverain country and the rivers are over flooded during the rains,
cavalry and elephants were inactive for almost half of the year. That
is why nawwara was established and Bengal's flotilla of war-boats
proved to be most effective. In the Mughal period, Islam Khan strengthened
the nawwara, and thus subjugated almost the whole of Bengal. [Abdul
